Legacy portraits and archival prints ·

When the family photos you'd pass down won't outlast you

Most families have thousands of pictures and not one that is built to survive the next fifty years. Here is how a legacy portrait, printed and framed to archival standards, changes what you leave behind.

Picture an afternoon at your parents' house. Someone pulls out the shoebox of old photos. Grandma's wedding portrait has gone pale and yellow at the edges. A snapshot from the eighties has shifted to a strange orange. Then someone asks for a picture of all of you together, the whole family as it is now, and every answer points to a phone.

That is the moment it lands: the photos you would actually want your grandchildren to hold are scattered across devices, or printed on paper that is already quietly fading.

What it costs to wait

Generations don't stay lined up for long. The year your parents, you and your kids can all stand in one frame doesn't come back once it has passed.

Even when the photo exists, an ordinary print on an ordinary wall is exposed to light, dust and moisture every day. Over time the faces you care about soften and discolour, and what was meant to be passed down becomes something to apologize for.

How we make a portrait that lasts

We start with a custom session designed specifically for your family. No template: we plan it around who is coming, which generations you want together and how you want to be remembered. Sessions take place at our studio in Falkland, serving the greater Okanagan.

Then we print. A legacy print is made on museum-quality archival paper with inks that stand the test of time. It is a matted print on acid-free paper, so the paper itself won't eat away at the image.

Then we frame it correctly to protect the work. The professional frame provides airtight sealing and UV protection, and shields the portrait against dust, moisture and insects.

Andrea wears gloves when handling the prints, so nothing from the studio leaves a mark on the piece you will hand down.

If the generations you want to honour include people who are no longer here, we can help with that too. Photo restoration and scanning can bring older family photos back, and legacy wall design can bring them together with your new portrait.

What changes for you

Instead of a phone full of almost-good pictures, you have one portrait of your family, as it is right now, made to be on the wall for your children and theirs.

The next time someone asks for a photo of everyone, you won't reach for a phone. You will point to the wall.
